English Language Learners (ELLs) at American Leadership Academy
An important part of our mission at American Leadership Academy is to serve as many students as possible. It is important to us to stay true to this mission at all times, regardless of a student’s primary language or cultural background. This is why we are proud to offer comprehensive, state-approved services for English Language Learners at our campuses.
Is my student an English Language Learner?
Your student may be considered an English language learner if he or she speaks a language other than English, or if a language other than English is spoken at home.
How does ALA identify students as English Language Learners?
During enrollment, each family will fill out a PHLOTE (Primary Home Language Other Than English) form, which is used to identify possible English Language Learners. From there, students can take an AZELLA (Arizona English Language Learner Assessment). The results of this assessment determine whether or not the student is considered an English Language Learner.
How does ALA help English Language Learners?
ALA follows state guidelines when it comes to helping and supporting English Language Learners through the language acquisition process. Click here to learn more about these guidelines from the Arizona Department of Education.
At schools with smaller populations, English Language Learners are kept in mainstream classrooms and are provided with an Individual Language Learner Plan (ILLP).
At schools with larger populations, English Language Learners may be grouped into English Language Development (ELD) classrooms.
In both cases, our goal is to help English Language Learners succeed and thrive—academically and socially.
