A Gift of Innovation and Inspiration: The Swan Airplane Donation
The American Leadership Academy Applied Technologies Aviation Academy was recently given a gift that will change the way our students learn. Donald A. Swan Jr., a lifelong aviation enthusiast, donated an experimental airplane he designed and began building himself. The aircraft, called The SIB, shows his passion for both engineering and creative design.

Mr. Swan and his wife went a step further. In addition to providing funding for the plane’s engine, they gave a $5,000 check to the Aviation Academy to support our program. Their generosity means our students will not only finish this airplane but also gain resources that help them grow their skills in a hands-on way.

Even while facing his own health challenges, Mr. Swan shared the story behind his design with our students. They asked questions about his choices, his process, and his vision. Watching them connect with him—and realizing they were being trusted with his work—was a moving moment for everyone in the room.
This isn’t just a plane or a financial gift. It’s a chance for our students to face real engineering problems, practice mechanical skills, and see how creativity drives aviation forward. Most of all, it’s a reminder of how one family’s generosity can spark inspiration and open doors for the next generation.
We are truly grateful to the Swan family for their support and for believing in our mission.
