Meet Gilbert North's 7-12 Orchestra Teacher

Canadian and American cellist, Jennifer Son is an avid chamber musician and artist. She has performed in venues in various Canadian provinces, the U.S.A., Korea, and India.

As a teacher, she envisions traveling to share her passion in parts of the world where Western Classical music education is limited. Regularly invited as a resident guest artist to music festivals such as Con Brio in Bombay, India, she collaborates and teaches with artists from around the world. As the Young Artist in Residence, Jennifer performed with members of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and The Cleveland Orchestra at the Steamboat Springs Music Festival. She was a section member of the Lincoln Symphony Orchestra, and is currently a substitute with the Phoenix Symphony. She represented British Columbia with her chamber ensemble and won various awards and prizes at the Canadian Nationals Music Competition.

Jennifer served as faculty and instructor at the Cleveland School of the Arts, Interlochen Center for the Arts, Cuyahoga Community College, and the ASU String Project. She was also featured as a soloist as a recent winner of the ASU concerto competition as well as the Fresno International competition. Passionate about giving back, Jennifer volunteers in her community, including United Sound, which provides musical experiences for students with special needs. Son is an alumna of the prestigious Vancouver Academy of Music where she began her cello studies at the age of six with Audrey Nodwell. Receiving her Bachelor’s of Music degree at the Chicago College of Performing Arts with their top scholarship award, she completed her Master’s of Music degree in cello performance with an emphasis in Pedagogy at the Cleveland Institute of Music. Jennifer spent a year at the University of Nebraska studying with Gregory Beaver, where she was appointed as the Hixson-Lied graduate fellow, teaching assistant, as well as the chamber music outreach coordinator and administrator. She is currently pursuing her Doctor of Musical Arts degree at Arizona State University under the tutelage of Professor Thomas Landschoot where she also served as a teaching assistant. Her primary teachers include Dr. Tanya L. Carey and Dr. Melissa Kraut. In her spare time, Jennifer enjoys spending quality time with her friends and family, including her dog, Forrest, and cat named Dodo.
