As part of our celebration of Read Across America Week, ALA Gilbert South’s Third Grade students had the special privilege of welcoming Mayor Kevin Hartke of Chandler, AZ, to their classroom. Mayor Hartke brought with him a love for reading and a passion for service, engaging students with one of his favorite books, Horton Hears a Who by Dr. Seuss. He explained that he loves this story because it features a mayor—a fitting connection to his own role in the community!

The excitement in the room was evident as Mayor Hartke read aloud, his enthusiasm for the story captivating our young learners. Following the reading, students eagerly asked him questions about his responsibilities as a mayor and how he serves the city of Chandler. The discussion quickly turned to leadership, service, and the values that guide strong citizens.

Our students proudly shared their understanding of the RAISE valuesRespect, Accountability, Integrity, Service, and Excellence—important principles they follow as young leaders on campus. Mayor Hartke reinforced these values, encouraging students to always seek ways to help others. “This world is so very, very fascinating, and you get to play an exciting part in making it better. How cool is that?” he shared with an inspiring smile.

He went on to emphasize the importance of curiosity and lifelong learning. “You have the chance to do really good things. Learning principles (RAISE values) that were espoused here will really help you be a tremendous leader later on in life. I would say that and then I would say continue to be curious because that’s really what life is all about—being curious.”

When asked how students can be good citizens, Mayor Hartke had a powerful message: “You can lead by building up others around you, by saying kind words, and not putting up with bullies in your classroom. And I think the reason someone is being a certain way, try to understand ‘What are they going through?’ Because generally, I find that if people are struggling with something, they tend to express themselves in a way (outside of their character)." Expressing the significance of first, seek to understand then use that understanding to lead. "So, you have the opportunity to lead every day—you have the opportunity to lead in your home by being good kiddos and in your school.”

The joy and passion Mayor Hartke has for reading and service could certainly be felt throughout the room. His visit left a lasting impression on our students, inspiring them to embrace leadership, kindness, and curiosity in their daily lives. We are deeply grateful to Mayor Hartke for taking the time to visit ALA Gilbert South and for sharing his wisdom and encouragement with our young leaders. His words and actions continue to remind us all that a person’s a person, no matter how small—and that each of us has the power to make a difference.
