What is a Charter School?

Operating under a performance contract called a charter—which details mission, curriculum, goals, and assessment methods—charter schools are publicly funded institutions with greater autonomy than traditional public schools. They are designed to promote innovation and provide diverse educational options suited to the specific needs of the communities they serve.
