Preparing Student for Graduation and What Comes Next
American Leadership Academy Mesa North provides tuition-free public charter education for students in grades 7–12, serving families from Mesa, Gilbert, Apache Junction, and surrounding East Valley communities.
The middle and high school experience helps students grow from developing independent learners into graduates prepared for college, career training, military service, employment, and adult responsibility.
Students are supported through core academics, electives, course planning, advanced learning opportunities, Student Services, character development, and a school culture guided by ALA’s R.A.I.S.E. values.
Junior High | Grades 7-8
Preparing for High School
Junior high helps students transition from elementary routines into a more independent academic environment.
Students continue building knowledge in English, mathematics, science, and history while beginning to manage multiple teachers, assignments, electives, deadlines, and longer-term responsibilities. These years are also a time to explore interests and prepare for high school coursework.
Two Year Plan
Students and families work together during grades 7 and 8 to develop a two-year plan that prepares students for high school coursework and future academic expectations.
Education and Career Action Plan
In 8th grade, students begin developing their Education and Career Action Plan (ECAP) with support from a Student Services Advisor, exploring high school coursework, career interests, and long-term goals.
High School Credit
Some junior high coursework may qualify for high school credit, including Algebra 1 and Geometry. High school-level world language may earn credit with a C or above and at least 80% on the final exam.

Graduation and Future Readiness
High school at ALA Mesa North High work toward graduation while developing greater ownership of their education.
Required coursework is balanced with electives and opportunities that allow students to explore academic interests, career possibilities, leadership, athletics, fine arts, and school involvement.

Academic Support and Student Growth
ALA's academic model recognizes that students learn at different rates and times. Students are given multiple opportunities to demonstrate mastery, and assessment retakes may be available according to course and school guidelines.
This approach supports student growth, reduces the need for credit recovery, and helps students continue building mastery of important academic standards.
Student Services helps families navigate course selection, diploma pathways, graduation requirements, college preparation, transcripts, testing, and career planning.
Assessments
Students enrolled in Arizona public education participate in required state assessments.
Junior High: Students in grades 7 and 8 complete state assessments in reading, writing, and math. 8th graders also take the state science assessment and the civics exam.
High School: Students participate in assessments such as ACT Aspire, AzSCI, and the ACT, depending on grade level and state requirements, and must meet the civics exam requirement for graduation.
Career & Technical Education
Career and Technical Education allows students to explore industries, develop practical skills, and connect academic learning with future employment.
CTE opportunities may be available through Mesa North courses, ALA programs, or partner schools such as ALA Applied Technologies. Programs, transportation, eligibility, schedules, certifications, and available seats may vary.
Students interested in CTE should work with Student Services to ensure the program fits their graduation plan and required course load.
College and Career Readiness
A successful high school plan should reflect a student’s goals—not a single definition of success. Mesa North students pursue varied pathways: university, community college, technical education, military service, or employment. College and career readiness support may include:

Advanced Academic Opportunities
Students who are ready for additional academic challenge may be able to pursue advanced coursework. Depending on grade level, course availability, enrollment, prerequisites, and student readiness, opportunities may include:

- College credit opportunities
- Career-focused academic pathways
Advanced courses typically move more quickly, examine subjects in greater depth, and require stronger independent study habits.
