Canvas Information

A Learning Management System (LMS) is a software that helps simplify teaching and learning by connecting the digital tools teachers, students, and parents use. LMS are used as a central hub where:

• Teachers can upload lessons, assignments, quizzes, and resources.
• Students can access course materials, submit work, take tests, and track their progress.
• Parents/Observers can view course contet, monitor student progress, and receive notifications about a student's activity. 

The use of Canvas will be varied, depending on the subject and the teacher needs. 

Grade 6-12 Teachers May Use Canvas To:

• Receive and grade student assignments, discussions, and quizzes

• Easily align assignments and rubrics to standards and/or learning objectives

• Provide students with written, audio, or video feedback on submitted work

• Post assigned work and course-related events into a class calendar

• Organize course materials and assignments to make them easier to find and access

• Push course notifications to students via email and text

No, some teachers may not use Canvas as a classroom tool.

Students will access Canvas by logging in through Clever with their ALA schools email account. All courses on the student’s schedule should be on the student dashboard in Canvas. In every English class, there is a brief instructional unit to introduce students to Canvas and guide them through internet safety and etiquette. The course MUST be completed prior to accessing the rest of the content for the English class.

A Parent Observer account lets parents or guardians:

• Access class materials and assignments online using any device or browser
• Track student progress through ongoing teacher feedback 
• Receive course announcements instantaneously on a preferred device(s)
• Stay up to date with student work during a student absence 
• Easily collaborate with peers and communicate with the teacher

As a student, you can generate a pairing code to link an observer to your Canvas account. You must create a separate pairing code for each observer who wants to link to your account. Yes. You can customize notification preferences to receive alerts about grades, missing assignments, announcements, and more.

Grades are only available through the Infinite Campus portal, not always on Canvas

If you are having technical issues, such as logging into Canvas or viewing your courses, please first consult with your teacher or an administrator for more assistance. If the issue cannot be fixed, your teacher will put in a support ticket to resolve the issue.
