Astronaut Jessica Meir Sends Special Shoutout to ALA Sierra Vista Mrs. Bouchard's 3rd Grade Class
Students at ALA Sierra Vista received an unforgettable message from space as NASA astronaut Jessica Meir sent a personal video shoutout from aboard the International Space Station to Mrs. Bouchard’s third-grade class.
Speaking from orbit nearly 250 miles above Earth, Meir gave students a glimpse into life on the space station, which travels at 17,500 miles per hour and circles the planet every 90 minutes—creating 16 sunrises and sunsets each day. She described the experience of living in microgravity and viewing Earth from space as truly awe-inspiring.
In a special connection to the classroom, Meir shared that she and Mrs. Bouchard are both from Caribou, making the message even more meaningful for students. She praised the class for their interest in astronomy and for following along with the station’s live feed.
Meir also highlighted daily life aboard the station, from eating and exercising to preparing for upcoming spacewalks. She described spacewalks as an incredible experience—floating in a suit while looking out at Earth and the vastness of space—and told students she would be thinking of them during her next one.
She closed her message by encouraging students to keep learning, stay curious, and continue working toward their dreams—reminding them that their future possibilities are limitless.
