State Mandated Assessments

In North Carolina, students in public schools are required by state law to take certain assessments throughout their education. These tests help measure learning progress and ensure students are on track. Learn more information about each assessment below.

  • Grades 7 & 8: Students take End-of-Grade (EOG) assessments at the end of each school year.
  • High School Courses: Students enrolled in Biology, English II, NC Math 1, or NC Math 3 will take an End-of-Course (EOC) assessment when they finish the course.
  • Grade 10: Students take the PreACT.
  • Grade 11: Students take the ACT.

NOTE: Some students may be given alternate assessments, depending on their individual needs and eligibility.

Read to Achieve

In North Carolina, the Read to Achieve law is designed to make sure that all students are reading at or above grade level by the end of third grade. Throughout the year, third graders take reading assessments such as the Beginning-of-Grade test, the End-of-Grade test, or the Read to Achieve test. A proficient score on any of these assessments shows that a student is ready to move on to the next grade.

If a student is not yet proficient, there are additional ways to demonstrate success, including completing a reading portfolio, taking an alternative assessment, or attending a summer reading camp. For students who continue to need support, extra help is provided either during summer programs or in the following school year to ensure steady progress in reading.
