Fine Arts at ALA Johnston

Fine Arts at American Leadership Academy Johnston gives students opportunities to create, perform, collaborate, and develop skills that grow through practice.

Our Upper School programs welcome students of all experience levels, offering beginning, intermediate, and advanced opportunities across a wide range of disciplines including visual art, band, jazz band, orchestra, choir, dance, ballroom, photography, and theatre.

Whether a Patriot wants to learn a new instrument, perform onstage, or work behind the scenes in technical theatre, Johnston provides a place for everyone to find their creative voice.

A Pathway to Success

Arts, Character, and Graduation

Fine Arts are an active part of a student’s high school graduation plan. ALA Johnston includes Fine Arts within its high school credit requirements and elective planning across all diploma pathways. Students can work closely with Student Services to select the right creative courses for their individual graduation plan.

Beyond the transcript, the arts provide a natural environment for students to put ALA's R.A.I.S.E. values into action. Respecting the ensemble, accepting feedback, and helping a production succeed behind the scenes teaches students that making a meaningful contribution does not always mean being the person everyone notices.

What Students Build Through the Arts

The performance may be the visible part, but most of the learning happens before anyone ever sees it. Fine Arts give students hands-on practice with skills that extend well beyond a single concert or production:

  • Creativity
  • Confidence
  • Communication
  • Collaboration
  • Preparation
  • Focus
  • Technical skill
  • Time management
  • Responding to feedback
  • Persistence

Creative work is rarely perfect the first time. That is exactly the point. Students rehearse, revise, adjust, and try again. Eventually, something that was difficult becomes something they confidently know how to do.

“The arts are an essential element of education,  just like reading, writing, and arithmetic, music, dance, art, and theater are all keys that unlock  profound human understanding and accomplishment.”
~William Bennett, Former US Secretary of Education.

Find Your Creative Path at ALA Johnston

Some students know early that music or theatre is going to be part of their life. Others find out because they tried a class they almost did not take. ALA Johnston gives students several ways to explore the arts, whether they want to sing, play an instrument, perform, work backstage, draw, or become part of an ensemble.

Families should review current course catalogs and work with Student Services for the latest Fine Arts offerings, auditions, performances, festivals, and participation requirements.
